Scottow Cemetery

Scottow Cemetery & Burial Ground Incorporating Military and War Graves.

Put simply, Scottow Cemetery is a very special place indeed. If you’re fortunate to visit Scottow Cemetery on a warm summer’s day, you’ll appreciate how incredibly peaceful and tranquil this very special part of rural Norfolk is.

Together with a respectful appreciation and honour to the fallen, this beautiful space is outstanding.

Overall site development plan

Cemetery Development.

In 2019 Scottow Parish Council took the decision to purchase additional land adjacent to its cemetery, due to the high occupancy and lack of available space within the existing site. By doing so the use of the cemetery for future generations has been ensured.

A peaceful sanctuary, the burial ground is surrounded on all sides by open landscapes and Norfolk’s infamous large Skies. The new site will eventually be populated with mature trees, shrubs and flowers where visitors are able to journey the winding gravel paths through peaceful secluded areas of reflection.

This bold and ambitious plan for the small parish of Scottow will take time to develop and mature. Phase 1, shown on the adjacent plan, is now open and in use for internments and burials and is open to all parish residents as well as the wider community.

If you wish to use the Chapel please telephone the Burials Officer on 07506 481841

The Commonwealth War Graves.

During the early days of World War II, an area to the northern side of the Burial Ground was set aside for those brave military personnel who served and fell during the conflict and were based at the nearby R.A.F. Station Coltishall, including 7 German airmen who fell during their commitment of duty. Scottow Cemetery was used for this purpose until September 1943.

After the war the Cross of Sacrifice was built at the burial ground to commemorate the 60 military casualties laid to rest during the war years. One of those brave soles is unidentified.

Guidance when choosing Scottow Cemetery & Burial Ground.

We understand dealing with the arrangements after a bereavement can be an extremely difficult time and our burials officer, together with your chosen funeral director will guide you through the process of laying your loved one to rest.

Selection of a plot: can be discussed with our burials officer who will inform you of the areas of the cemetery currently available for public use and can visit the site with you in order to discuss your wishes and the precise location.

Internment plots are designated areas set aside for interment in an earthen grave not exceeding 9ft x 4ft. Interment of cremated remains in a grave are also possible providing the Exclusive Right of Burial has been granted.

Grave/Burial plots are designated areas set aside for burials and a grave spaces. Our site has been designed on the basis of a standard grave size, as set by the International Cemetery, Cremation, and Funeral Association but we are happy to discuss alternative sizes should it be requested.

Exclusive rights of Burial provide you the right to bury a body or scatter ashes (cremated remains) in that grave. As the owner of the grave, these Rights mean that you have to give permission for remains or ashes to be buried in it. You also have the right to add a memorial to the grave.

All the above will be explained to you by the Burials Officer.

Stunning and bespoke stone memorials.

Families and loved ones are encouraged to liaise directly with a Stonemason to achieve the perfect bespoke memorial from a simple vase or headstone, to a bespoke individually designed memorial and will be guided through the process of choosing the desired materials including Granite, Limestone, Slate and Marble, as well as shape, design and style of lettering.

Nick Hindle Stonemasons, an award winning independent local business, is a master craftsman and provides quality memorials and stonework for Scottow Cemetery. Fittingly Nick’s portfolio includes the National Memorial Arboretum as well as military memorials for The Ministry of Defence.

Providing hand cut lettering, carving, sculpture and design his work can be seen online at www.nickhindlestonemason.co.uk or visitors are welcome to make an appointment to discuss memorial requirements and view examples at Nicks local workshop and showrooms in Wroxham and North Walsham. Approvals and full installation service are included.

Floral tributes.

We encourage visitors and the laying of flowers is permitted but please be aware they will be removed once they are past their best, usually within 3 weeks in order to maintain a tidy space. Please ensure any artificial floral tributes are securely fastened to your area so as not to be blown away in windy conditions.

Thanks and gratitude.
